How a government decides to fund public schools can say a lot about how children are valued and use children are of value. Funding school should be fare across the board and give parents the peace of mind knowing they are sending their children to a place the has a safe environment to learn. Funding model should also keep in mind that not all children have to same abilities and all children will find their way to needing help at some given point. Some children will need more help than others and the funding model should make sure they are well taken care of.
A public school funding model should ensure that teachers are plentiful and well trained. There should enough teacher are to make that those students who need consent one on one help are available. The school is there to train minds and the teachers should be trained to make sure that all student can think. When I say think I mean problem-solve to the point hey can think outside the box to come up with new innovations that will help our species live will past things like climate crisis.
Public school are failing to do what I have stated above and the BC Government is only going to make thing worse by introducing the set of resolutions listed in the document labelled
“Improving Equity and Accountability.”
I warmly invite you to click and download it now. Read it later so you can join the rest of the outraged community who might see this as a way to shut out students with disabilities from learning. It could be seen as more than when I concerned that this plan of funding that is based on the most prevalent statics of the children in the public school system. Only normal children will be funded. Now, this could mean that any children whose parents can not afford private schools will not receive advanced class to help there mind excel and develop. Do we parents and grandparents really want this for our children. The future of the human species is at stake and our schools can do better than teaching our children to take a test that shows they can pass the status quo.
The BCTF has issued a document about this funding model that and to say they are not happy about it would be an understatement. While I do agree with the teaching union this Prevalence Model is one of the biggest mistakes ever I want to question the motives of the BCTF. Are they just out to increase paycheques. They are making statements about how teachers here are the lowest paid in Canada. The fact is that why should we as the taxpaying public care about that when the cost of living for all us is out whack. BC is often said to mean “Bring Cash” because most of us are working 3 jobs just to make ends meet. There is another side to the lower pay scale if they are stating they can find quality mind training teacher to work here that would a serious problem to consider.
I did interview a teacher about some of the problems that the Prevalence Model will create. Listen what Kaija Farstad has to say as a teacher and as a parent. She is raising two children one is a gifted child and the other is on the Autism Spectrum. Both children disserve the opportunity to excel and both children I believe could become leaders in our society with the right mind training. This training should not be limited to private schools and what find privately should be found publicly so all of future generations can build a better world.
I shared this on a Facebook Group
I am looking to understand what I am reading in a government resolution document involving funding for schools. It looks like this new funding model will hit special needs the hardest
these were the comments made
Is this the one that funds high school students to a maximum of 8 blocks, effectively killing all music (and other) programs that run outside the day. So like, all of them?
There is no educational rationale for the Prevalency Model. It is simply a way to save money and time for admin. Combined with the fact that they are also changing the Ministry designations, there will be many on the Autism spectrum and many who are learning disabled who will no longer be eligible for funding and support. IMO – To do this while negotiating a new contract is not ‘good faith’ bargaining.
An administrator told me today “the new funding model proposal terrifies me.”
^ take that for what it’s worth.
I’m trying to be open to positive takes on it, but so far the people I admire and respect are all pretty worried about it. I personally don’t understand why it’s necessary. We don’t need a new funding model, we need more funding. 🤷🏻♀️ We can change models all we like but how is that addressing the funding issues? I feel like we might be more receptive to it if we weren’t literally in the trenches working in the conditions of scarcity all the time. How the heck can we trust, given our lived experiences of seeing students and educators get short-changed?
