Loving First: How Opening Your Heart Unlocks Divine Truth and Inner Peace

We live in a world that thrives on conditions. From a young age, we are taught the mechanics of transactional living: do good work to earn a promotion, act a certain way to fit into a social group, or meet specific standards to be deemed worthy of affection. Society continuously projects a rigid message—that in order to be accepted or loved, you must first change who you are, measure up to a checklist, or conform to external expectations. We are conditioned to believe that obedience, performance, and external compliance must precede love.

However, when we look at the teachings of Jesus in the Gospel of John, particularly in John 14, this worldly logic is turned completely upside down.

In John 14:15-27, Jesus presents a radical framework for living: “If you love me, keep my commands.” He does not say, “Keep my commands so that I will love you.” He flips the script entirely. Love is not the reward for obedience; love is the catalyst. Loving first is the key that unlocks divine guidance, deepens our intuition, and welcoming the Holy Spirit into our everyday lives.

1. The Flipping of the Worldly Script: Love Before Obedience

When society tells us that love must be earned, it creates a posture of fear and insecurity. We begin to look at our spiritual lives through the lens of performance. We wonder if we are doing enough, praying enough, or following the rules strictly enough to warrant God’s favor.

Jesus offers an entirely different way of being. He invites us to start with love.

When you open your heart to love first, the posture of your entire life shifts. Obedience ceases to be a rigid obligation or a burdensome duty; instead, it becomes a natural overflow of affection. You don’t follow the teachings of Christ out of fear of punishment, but because your heart has been captivated by the Father’s love.

In John 14, Jesus promises that when we operate from this place of love, we are never left to navigate the complexities of life alone:

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)

The world fails to recognize this Advocate because it is blinded by physical metrics, cold logic, and conditional standards. But when you choose love first, you awaken to a deeper reality: the Spirit of truth residing within you, guiding your steps from the inside out.

2. Going Beyond the Five Senses: Spiritual Perception and Intuition

Modern culture trains us to rely almost exclusively on our five physical senses—what we can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. We rely heavily on empirical evidence, physical security, corporate achievements, and tangible status. While these senses are necessary for navigating the physical world, they are severely limited when it comes to experiencing spiritual truth.

Jesus points out that physical sight is not the same as spiritual recognition. He told His disciples that while the world would soon no longer see Him physically, they would continue to see Him because He lives within them.

To experience this, we must look beyond our physical senses and tune into our spiritual perception:

  • From Sight to Vision: Our physical eyes see circumstances, obstacles, and limitations. Spiritual vision, cultivated through the Holy Spirit, sees divine opportunity, hope, and the bigger picture of God’s redemptive work.
  • From Hearing to Discernment: Our physical ears are constantly bombarded by the noise of culture, news, and external opinions. Spiritual discernment allows us to hear the quiet, persistent whisper of the Holy Spirit guiding our decisions.
  • From Feeling to Inner Knowing: Physical touch tells us about our immediate environment, but spiritual intuition—the deep “knowing” planted by the Spirit—anchors our souls even when our physical surroundings are chaotic.

When we stop limiting our awareness to what sits in our corporate or material lives, we begin to pay attention to our spiritual health. We realize that God speaks to us continuously through a quiet inner prompt, an intuitive pull, and a deep, unshakeable sense of guidance. All we have to do is quiet the noise and open our hearts to listen.

3. Answering Judas’ Question: The Private Revelation of Divine Love

During this profound conversation in the Upper Room, Judas (not Iscariot) asks a question that many of us often wrestle with:

“But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” (John 14:22)

It’s a fair question. Wouldn’t it be easier if God revealed Himself through a massive, undeniable, dramatic display to the entire world? Why does divine revelation seem so quiet, personal, and internal?

Jesus answers by reiterating the central condition of spiritual connection: love.

“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” (John 14:23)

God does not force His presence upon a world that refuses to love or receive Him. The manifestation of God’s presence is an intimate, relational experience. God makes His “home” inside the hearts of those who welcome Him. It is not about a public spectacle; it is about an internal habitation.

This means that your relationship with God is deeply personal. You don’t need a middleman, an elaborate ceremony, or worldly approval to experience the divine. When you open your heart in love, the Creator of the universe makes His dwelling within you. You become a living temple, carrying the very presence, wisdom, and peace of God wherever you walk.

4. The Gift of Divine Peace vs. Worldly Anxiety

One of the most comforting promises in all of Scripture arrives near the end of John 14. Jesus, knowing that He is about to face the cross and that His disciples will soon encounter immense hardship, offers them a gift:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

It is crucial to contrast the peace that Jesus gives with the “peace” offered by the world:

Worldly Peace Divine Peace (Christ’s Peace)
Conditional: Depends entirely on ideal circumstances, financial security, or external stability. Unconditional: Transcends circumstances, remaining steady even in the midst of trials and uncertainty.
Temporary: Fleeting and easily shattered by bad news, conflict, or unexpected life changes. Eternal: Anchored in the unchanging nature of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Surface-Level: Often just an absence of obvious conflict or a distraction from reality. Deep & Restorative: A profound quietness of the soul that quells fear and drives out anxiety from the inside out.

Worldly peace is fragile because it relies on control. Divine peace is unbreakable because it relies on trust. When Christ offers us His peace, He is inviting us to release our desperate grip on trying to control outcomes, corporate ladders, and external perceptions. He calls us to rest in the assurance that we are held by a loving Father who is far greater than any challenge we will ever face.

5. Living transformed: Walking in Spiritual Awareness Daily

How do we take these profound truths and integrate them into our daily lives? How do we move from head knowledge to a lived, spiritual experience?

  1. Practice “Love First” Mindsets: Before entering difficult conversations, work environments, or stressful family dynamics, pause and consciously choose love. Ask yourself: “How can I approach this situation from a posture of love rather than a posture of defense or performance?”
  2. Silence the Noise: Dedicate time each day to step away from screens, corporate demands, and sensory overload. Give the Holy Spirit room to speak to your intuition and bring to your remembrance the truths of God’s Word.
  3. Guard Your Heart Against Fear: When anxiety threatens to overwhelm you, treat it as a signal to return to Christ’s promise. Remind yourself that you have not been left as an orphan; you carry an indwelling Advocate who provides wisdom and peace.
  4. Cultivate Gratitude and Faith: Trust that God is actively working in your life, even when your physical senses cannot trace His moves. Walk by faith, knowing that the Spirit within you is greater than the pressures around you.
