In a world filled with arguments over who belongs, where borders should be drawn, and who gets access to resources, it can be easy to fall into a mindset of scarcity and division. But when we look at the message of Ephesians 2, we are invited into a completely different reality—one built not on hostility, but on radical unity and peace.
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians addresses a deep cultural divide of his time: the separation between Jews and Gentiles. Yet his message speaks directly to our modern struggles with xenophobia, nationalistic division, and personal isolation.
1. Breaking Down the Walls of Hostility
In Ephesians 2, Paul reminds believers that those who were once considered “strangers” or “foreigners” have been brought near through Christ:
“For he himself is our peace, who has made two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility… Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.”
Politically and socially, this passage completely reframes how we view outsiders. In God’s eyes, there is no such thing as an “outcast” or “illegal” person unworthy of dignity. The dividing walls built on fear, race, or nationality have been torn down on the cross.
2. Moving from Policy to the Personal
It’s easy to debate what governments or institutions should do, but real change begins in our own hearts and homes.
To live out the message of the Gospel, we must ask ourselves:
- Are our doors open? Do we welcome those who are different from us, or do we retreat into comfortable, selective circles?
- How do we respond to need? We might not have the infinite capacity to solve every person’s problems, but we can always offer something—whether it’s connecting someone to a helpful resource, sharing a warm meal, or simply sitting with them in prayer.
When someone approaches us in need, they should leave knowing that they met a welcoming heart and found a place of peace, even if only for a moment.
3. Community Over Scarcity
A major driver of division is the fear that if “they” succeed, “we” will lose out. This mindset breeds greed and hostility.
When you join yourself to a true community built on God’s love:
- Generosity replaces greed: Accepting help with gratitude and offering support freely creates a cycle of abundance.
- Stealing vs. Sharing: Stealing or taking from others only yields short-term gains, but opening your heart to a community opens you up to lasting spiritual and personal riches.
- Mutual Support: We are all children of the same Creator—deserving of love, grace, and belonging.
Living as a Peaceful Haven
Christ didn’t set aside the law and lay down His life just as a theological concept; He did it as an example for us to follow. We are called to be a living sanctuary where hostility dies and peace takes root.
Whether in our family relationships, our churches, or our broader communities, let’s choose to tear down the walls, extend a welcoming hand to the stranger, and build a household where everyone has a place at the table.
