In the past, 18 months. We have seen a lot of incidences of racism on very many different levels. A lot of the issues have been aimed not exclusively at indigenous people, but we’ve seen things, aimed at Asian people, we’ve seen racism and prejudice. Acts, aimed at people who follow the Muslim faith. There’s been a lot of hatred passed around. Some of it may have been already there underlying and just surfaced in bubbled up. But some of the areas that we’ve been finding racism and prejudices in pre-judgments have surfaced in our social systems and government.
The level of racism has extended all the way to the House of Commons in Parliament Hill, to the point that the MP NDP MP have none of it has decided to step down from office. She says she does not belong there because of the systemic racism, the systemic problems being aimed at indigenous people. Her people are the Inuit but they are suffering from a lack of housing. Lack of healthcare resources and clean water. The Inuit people are in a state of survival. While the rest of Canada is able to thrive. She ran for office, with the thought and the idea that she could help her people and help bring resources back to the Inuit people of Nunavut. She is stepped down with the realization that that isn’t going to happen. We need to do something as a society, about racism and hatred. What we’ve been getting from our government may be nothing more than a series of lip services they need to take action. And that action needs to come almost immediately.
