UNITED NATIONS — Denmark officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for August 2026, setting the stage for a month focused on global food crises, mounting international tensions, and critical internal UN processes.
Under the leadership of Permanent Representative Ambassador Christina Markus Lassen, the 15-member council enters a high-stakes month as humanitarian emergencies escalate across multiple continents.
High-Level Debate on Conflict and Hunger
The centerpiece of Denmark’s monthly program is a signature high-level open debate titled “Food Under Fire: The Security Council’s Role in Mitigating Global and Local Food Crises”. To be chaired by Danish Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the session aims to strengthen the implementation of Resolution 2417, which addresses conflict-induced hunger and the unlawful denial of humanitarian access.
Briefings are expected from senior UN officials, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and leadership from the World Food Programme.
Pressing Regional Crises
The Council’s schedule reflects a world grappling with simultaneous compound crises:
-
Middle East: Regular briefings are set on the ongoing situation in Gaza, Syria, and Yemen. Members are also monitoring maritime security risks in the Strait of Hormuz and post-UNIFIL operational planning in Lebanon. more here
-
Africa: Closed consultations will focus on the acute humanitarian emergency in Sudan—specifically Darfur and Kordofan—alongside scheduled briefings on peace operations in South Sudan (UNMISS) and UNSMIL’s mandate in Libya. more here
-
Europe: Council members expect continued discussions on the war in Ukraine, as well as a session marking the 18th anniversary of the 2008 Russia-Georgia war. more here
-
Asia: Security updates include consultations on North Korea (DPRK) sanctions and discussions marking five years under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. more here
Institutional Reforms & Leadership Selection
Beyond regional emergencies, August marks a key milestone in UN leadership. The Council is scheduled to conduct its next confidential “straw poll” to evaluate candidates vying to succeed António Guterres as UN Secretary-General when his term concludes.
The Council will also hold its annual open debate on working methods under Note 507, focusing on improving transparency, effectiveness, and civil society engagement within UN operations.
