Welcome to British Columbia and while you visit watch as we decide on our new Municipal Leader each town across our Province is in the process of deciding on what are the most important issues and what could the best solution to them. You are going to campaign for Slate Tickets “ Vote for our Team we have the answers to the most important issue in the City or Town of Blank BC.” We also have independent candidates running on the idea that they just want a chance to make a positive change in our community. If you are reading I want to thank you for reading but thank you for voting it is the one thing that keeps our communities democratic. The free election is what is going to be most important. Many communities around our world do not have the opportunity to vote in a free election. Some communities have a chance to cast a vote some with a gun to the head dictating who and what they should vote for while other communities have a limited view on who should be allowed to vote “ women don’t count and are not allowed to vote.” We live in British Columbia and every legal resident is allowed to vote. With the vote, we have a responsibility and there is a lot of homework so that we cast the vote to create and maintain the place we want to live in.
What is important for our cities and town in general? Most of them want and need a warm comfortable place to live and at least one bowl of good food to eat. Supposedly there is enough room to go around for everyone to have there is a growing problem of homelessness. Sidewalks and park bench sleepers are one thing but we are seeing a number of family living and camping in tents and RVs in city parks because they have been evicted from their home and have no other place to go. The problem escalates when municipal authorities come along again and sweep them for the parks. We have official claims that they are working on “Affordable Housing” but what happened that put people on the street? What sort of disconnect happened that took the homes away from these people? If Government on all level is working on this problem why can’t it be fixed? In a country like Canada, why can’t everyone have a roof and a warm place to live?
Affordable housing opens a door to many issues in our society and we need to ask many questions of our candidates this biggest one is Why is this happening and what are you going to do about it? This is like many other issues in our community while candidates are campaigning they will make a lot of promises but many in reality don’t really have a for those who might have a plan there is an agenda that could very well be bought and paid for by some big box developer group who only see a bottom line profit and doesn’t really care if there is or is not a homeless problem. The only problem they are worried about is how many houses they can build and how much they can get for them. Which leads to urban development? The goal here is not to create a beautiful town or city but the ultimate goal is to create a tiered society so that only the wealthy get the beauty and the rest of us get a room to live in and a bus to ride so we can get to the job and be a productive member of society pay bills and taxes and live as we are told. Go to work, set around at home watching a screen while munching on chips that are advertised on that same screen and live a good corporate life. We have to ask ourselves if urban development is worth the idea of losing trees and the natural beauty that surrounds us.
Some of the campaign promises have been made to build a new stadium, more neighbourhood pools and community centres. We should also be asking for more Green Spaces and that current Green Spaces be left as they are. Our community need more natural space to relax exercise and move. As we get closer to election time which of the candidates has revealed a plan? During these times we have promised many things and shown few plans to make our lives easier, less expensive, and more enriched. Transit, housing and parks are important. As people, we need a safe place to rest and that should come in the form of housing with enough space for all family members to stretch out and feel comfortable. Transit should be providing us with a comfortable way to go to work and travel about our community. We are being promised Skytrain but again we need to have a plan for a place to park our cars and catch a bus so we are essentially dropped off near our workspace in a timely manner. Taxes and programs need to make sense so we get service without losing too much income to things like fuel, food and other household expenses. Our candidates should provide us with plans that ensure we feel secure that we can live beyond a paycheque to paycheque life.
