In a world frequently marked by division, impatience, and an urgent desire for control, a recent reflection on 2 Peter 3 offers a profound reorientation for our faith community. The passage challenges us to reconsider the nature of divine timing, urging us to recognize that what we often perceive as God’s slowness in keeping His promises is actually an act of profound patience. This delay is not neglect; rather, it is rooted in a desire that no one should perish, inviting everyone toward repentance. This perspective shifts our focus from our own anxieties to a deeper trust in God’s redemptive timeline.

The sermon radically upends the common misconception that holiness is a mandate to police the behavior of others. Instead, true holy and godly living is defined by unconditional love, creating a safe space for individuals to discover their own unique paths to God. This means choosing unity over exclusion, ensuring that no one—regardless of whether they are a stranger or someone society labels as ungodly—is turned away. As we grow in faith and increasingly inhabit God’s love, the barriers of hatred and division that clutter our hearts should naturally fall away.

Scripture offers a vivid vision of the ultimate destination for believers: the creation of a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells. While the fullness of this reality remains beyond human comprehension, it serves as a powerful motivator for how we live today. We are challenged to envision a world entirely free from the burdens of discrimination, hatred, greed, rigid ownership, and systemic harm. This future is not merely a distant dream, but a standard by which we should measure our current actions and societal structures.

To truly integrate these teachings, we must wrestle with the practical questions of our journey. We must ask ourselves if we can genuinely visualize a world of complete equality in the present moment, and whether that vision can substantively change our behavior. Furthermore, we must confront the tension between our human impulse to try and change others and the divine call to simply offer love in our daily, messy interactions. Defining this boundary is essential for moving toward a more righteous way of existing alongside one another.

Moving these powerful ideas from the sanctuary into the wider world requires a commitment to tangible action. For the individual, this means engaging in daily reflection, constantly asking whether we are attempting to control others or offering them genuine love, and practicing radical openness through hospitality. Collectively, our community is called to help others discover their path to God by sharing wisdom generously, without imposing rigid frameworks. By committing to these practices, we align ourselves with the promise of righteousness and contribute to building the world we envision.
